Frankincense - A Farmers Story
Mark, an essential oil distiller in South Africa, has sent me two kilos of his Frankincense essential oil, distilled from the resins he acquired on his trip. I have promised him to sell his oil, and tell his story:
Mark has always been deeply interested in Frankincense from Arabia and Somaliland. Arabia and Somalialand are the homes of the highest quality Frankincense gums found on the most ancient plantations. He decided to travel into that world to network in the frankincense and myrrh industries, and he immersed himself in a fascinating place rooted in antiquity.
After a six-hour journey over the Ogaden desert in a 12-seater Beech craft plane, he arrived in Somaliland. No commercial airline tickets are available and one can only be offered a seat on this service if affiliated with one of the many non-governmental organizations that have interests in these remote parts of Africa. Having a website is really fun. Over the years we have had a few different websites and have learned how valuable they are for exposure of our work. Our websites give us platforms to share what we know and feel passionate about, to express ourselves, and to reach a much wider audience than we would any other way. Through my years as an aromatherapy teacher I have asked asked many of the students who take classes at Aromahead Institute if they have a website, or if they want a website. The two most most common answers I get are:
1. They do have a website but it is frustrating to keep it updated and expensive.
2. They wish they had a website but have no idea where to begin.
Given that my partner Cindy and I both love of all things web-related, we decided to look into the idea of creating website templates that are actually easy to use. A template that can be purchased, edited with absolute ease, and published to the web in a short amount of time! Read More
Writing for Online Aromatherapy Journals
I want to encourage you to write an article, story or case study for an Aromatherapy journal. It is a great way to share information with other Aromatherapists. I believe we all enjoy learning about what other Aromatherapists are doing with essential oils, and what they are learning through their work. If you are interested in writing, you can contact the journal directly by email and ask them any questions you might have. Here are a few guidelines for writing for the NAHA (National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy) and for the AIA (Alliance of International Aromatherapists).
NAHA: They have an e-journal and an e-newsletter. The e-newsletter comes out every month and the e-journal is 4 times a year. Currently they need articles (within the next 2 weeks) on a "medicinal theme" for the next e-journal. They need all articles written in a Microsoft Word .doc, in Times New Roman font. Your bio and contact information need to be included at the end of each article and they need a picture (headshot) sent as a JPEG.

AIA: Email them and ask for their packet of guidelines for submitting articles to their monthly e-newsletter called Aromatics News. You simply submit their Author Consent Form, type your article in Word, and send any charts or diagrams as a JPEG.

When writing for any journal or newsletter, remember to reference any written material you have used, and put Latin/botanical names next to the common name of any essential oil or carrier oil mentioned, with chemotype if relevant. You can use the typical referencing style offered by the AMA. Click Here for a good example of how to reference.
